Getting the most from your SLR

Photography seems to be a lot harder than I originally thought!

When I first started to try and take photos, I’d get the occasional good shot and think that maybe I’d be quite good at taking photos. I recently upgraded to an SLR, mainly after seeing some shots that my uncle took, only to find that it’s a lot harder than I thought.

With an SLE, you can just use the Auto setting if you want, but if you want to get the best photos then you need to manually adjust things such as the exposure, f-stop and a number of other things. For someone who had no experience with this, it was quite difficult to do. Luckily there are some very good resources online.

Here are some of my tips for making sure you get the most out of your SLR as a beginner:

  • Read the instructions carefully so that you know where everything on your camera is. If you don’t know where all the settings are and can’t access them quickly.
  • Don’t think that just because you’ve got an SLR that you’ll automatically be able to take good photos.
  • Remember that even professional photographers take a lot of photos when trying to get that perfect shot. There’s no reason why you can’t do the same – digital storage is very cheap and reusable.

I’ll probably start posting some of my images up on this blog soon so keep an eye out for those.

I’m also looking for a good community that discusses photography for beginners. Does anyone have any recommendations?
